Wheelchair Football Team
The Kansas City Chiefs Wheelchair Football Team is an adaptive sports program that enables athletes with physical disabilities to compete in the USA Wheelchair Football League (USAWFL). Since helping launch the league in 2019, the team has become one of the nation's most successful programs, reaching every championship game and winning three USAWFL Championships. Beyond competition, the program fosters teamwork, leadership, and community through the power of sport.
Tryouts are June 27, 2026 at the Pleasant Valley Road Athletic Complex field. For more information, please email Football Program Director Jason Loftiss at jloftiss@midwestadaptivesports.org. You do not need to have your own sports chair to try it out - we have program chairs available.
Our Wheelchair Football program is part of the Move United USA Wheelchair Football League and is made possible by the NFL-Bob Woodward Foundation Salute to Service Program.
Wheelchair Football
-
Players: Wheelchair Football is not just for people in wheelchairs, many amputees and people with other disabilities, that limit competition in "stand-up" football, play too.
-
Adapted Rules and Equipment: It follows the rules of traditional American Football with adaptations to accommodate wheelchair users and others with disabilities. The game involves teams of seven players. Offense has lineman, a quarterback, and skill positions (wide receivers/running backs). Defense has pass rushers, linebackers, and defensive backs.
-
Wheelchair Types: Players use sports wheelchairs that are specially designed for maneuverability on the field. These wheelchairs are typically lightweight and equipped with features like anti-tip wheels and reinforced frames to withstand the rigors of the game.
-
Gameplay: The objective of wheelchair football remains the same as traditional football: to score by running or throwing the ball across the goalline. Players block, run routes and catch the ball, run the football, drop back for passes, pass rush, stop the run and cover recievers.
-
Classifications: Similar to other adaptive sports, players are classified based on factors like upper body strength and mobility.
